Louie Armstrong is a quintessential American trailblazer and musical genius. Without him jazz, as we know it, would not exist. He, after all, is responsible for the "jazz solo." Before him, that didn't exist. He also brought the art of jazz vocals up to the levels we now know today. All the while, he blazed his extraordinary trail in a landscape riddled with brutal racism.

He is among the very best of us and our contribution to the world. Louie Armstrong should make every American proud to live in a country that could bring forward a figure like this to the planet.
